South Goa Collector Egna Cleetus said on Friday that the enforcement and monitoring teams constituted by the government to scrutinise resorts and nightclubs for compliance with safety norms have so far inspected 20 establishments in South Goa following the Birch fire incident that claimed 25 lives.

“The enforcement and monitoring teams have conducted inspections of a total of 20 establishments in South Goa so far,” said Cleetus, adding that one resort, ‘The Cape Goa’ at

Cabo de Rama in Canacona has been sealed for gross violations.

She said that several inspection reports have been received and these show violations.

“The inspection teams have concentrated primarily on public safety regulations and the requisite permissions and licences. We may allow some days for minor compliance issues; however, we will adopt a stringent stance on safety and technical requirements,” she said. Deputy Collector (Revenue) Rohan Loliyenkar has urged the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority and the Goa State Pollution Control Board to conduct an urgent site inspection of the sealed resort and initiate action.

He has also asked the Director of Tourism to verify whether there are encroachments on Tourism Department property.

Cleetus said the teams would also inspect shacks in South Goa during the festive season to ensure compliance with safety norms.
