Two separate incidents of unnatural death were reported from Tivim and Moira on Sunday, in which two 70-year-old women allegedly drowned in rivers.
In the first incident, a 70-year-old woman, Bibijan Udikeri (70), a resident of Auchitwaddo, Madel-Tivim, and a native of Belagavi, was reported missing from her residence at Tivim since Saturday evening.
Her family lodged a complaint with Colvale police. During the search, her slippers were found near a river, raising suspicion that she may have jumped in. A rescue operation was launched by locals along with Mapusa fire personnel, following which a body was recovered from the river.
The body was shifted to the North District Hospital in Mapusa, where doctors declared her ‘brought dead’.
During inquiry, it was learned that she was suffering from depression following the recent death of her grandson. Colvale police conducted a panchanama, registered an unnatural death case and shifted the body to the GMC morgue at Bambolim.
In the second incident, a 70-year-old woman, Lata Mavalankar (70), a resident of Vaiginwaddo, Nachinola, allegedly jumped from Moira Bridge. Locals who witnessed the incident jumped into the river and rescued her. She was handed over to the police, who rushed her to the North District Hospital at Peddem. Doctors examined her and declared her dead.
The body was shifted to the GMC morgue for post-mortem. The exact reason for taking the drastic step is not known. Mapusa police registered an unnatural death case in this connection.
