Even as the government is working to expand
the adoption of PNG as
an alternative fuel, over 4,500 households in Goa are already using Piped Natural Gas (PNG), with more than 180 housing societies connected, an official said.
At a recent meeting to review the rollout of PNG connections, officials said Goa Natural Gas Pvt Ltd and Indian Oil Adani Gas Pvt Ltd will scale up the installation of domestic PNG meters and expand
supply pipelines.
“PNG supply in Goa is currently limited to select areas, mainly in parts of North Goa and Ponda, where it is distributed by Goa Natural Gas,”
the official said.
Expansion into other areas, including parts of South Goa, has been slower due to infrastructure constraints, although Indian Oil Adani Gas Pvt Ltd has been authorised to develop the network there, the official said. The administration has set a target to ensure that residents of 100 already gasified housing societies transition fully to PNG, as some are yet to commence using the connections.
“Efforts are being made to speed up infrastructure development and improve access so that more households can benefit,” said an official, adding that the government is focusing on reducing dependence
wwon LPG.
PNG consists mainly of methane and is supplied through underground pipelines, providing a continuous supply without the need for cylinder storage. The official said its lighter-than-air property allows it to disperse quickly in case of leaks.
“PNG is billed based
on metered usage and
produces lower emissions compared to conventional fuels. It reduces maintenance needs and avoids
risks linked to handling
cylinders,” the official said.
