MMC clears HPCL land use for Vasco bus stand revamp amid objections

The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has approved the temporary handover of HPCL land to Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd (KTCL) to facilitate redevelopment of the existing Vasco bus stand under the PPP model.

As part of the plan, passenger bus operations and the KTC depot at the present site will be temporarily shifted to the HPCL land owned by MMC, allowing redevelopment work to begin.

Several councillors objected to the proposal, saying the site was accident-prone. They said the presence of fish and vegetable markets could lead to congestion and accidents if buses operate through the area.

“We have heard that the bus stand project will have commercial establishments and the Vasco depot will shift outside Vasco forever. Firstly, we want the depot to remain here and the same number of staff to continue working in Vasco. Secondly, as a municipality it is our duty to know the details of the upcoming bus stand project,” said former chairperson and councillor Deepak Naik.

Chairperson Girish Borkar said a presentation would be made to councillors detailing the project. “The HPCL land had been inspected and guidelines of the Vasco traffic cell would be followed before handing over the land,” said Borkar.

The decision followed a discussion in the council meeting, with councillors raising concerns over feasibility, traffic impact and the absence of prior detailed information on the project.
