Panaji: After reinstating six police officers to the posts of police inspectors in April, who have criminal cases pending against them, the Goa police department has promoted PSI Anand Narvekar to the post of police inspector on an officiating basis through an order issued on May 8.
The six police inspectors, against whom criminal cases are pending, were demoted to the rank of PSI in January this year following an order of the High Court of Bombay at Goa in a writ petition pertaining to the promotion of PSIs to PIs filed by Narvekar.
Subsequently, the six officers were reinstated in April, while Narvekar was promoted on May 8.
In the order promoting Narvekar, Goa police stated that the High Court, in its judgment dated July 14, 2025, in the writ petition filed by Narvekar, had directed authorities to open the sealed envelope concerning him.
The court had further directed that if Narvekar was recommended as suitable for promotion to the post of police inspector, then irrespective of the fact that a criminal case against him was pending, he should be issued an order promoting him as police inspector on an officiating basis on par with other PSIs who had been promoted despite criminal cases pending against them.
It may be noted that in January this year, the department had demoted Sandhya Gupta, Terrance Vaz, Rahul Dhamsekar, Sushant Gawas, Vilesh Dhurbhatkar and Sunil Gudlar.
All six officers were reinstated as police inspectors in April as per government directions, sources in Goa police said.
Narvekar had approached the court in connection with his non-consideration for promotion merely on the ground that a criminal case was pending against him, while the department in June 2022 had promoted four PSIs to the post of PI despite criminal cases pending against them.
