The family of the Mapusa victim, who allegedly died by suicide following the garbage dumping issue, has lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of Police (North) alleging that the police harassment, social media circulation of a video, and media reporting led to the suicide of the 22-year-old youth.

In the complaint, the mother claimed that her son was falsely implicated in a criminal case registered at Mapusa police station on June 4.

She alleged that police officials subjected him to public humiliation and mental distress by summoning him to the police station, making him sit for several hours, and allowing a video related to the case to be widely circulated on social media platforms.

According to the complaint, the video and subsequent media reports damaged the youth’s reputation and caused severe emotional trauma. The family contends that the actions of police personnel and others involved in recording, sharing, and publicising the video contributed directly to his death.

The complainant has sought the registration of an FIR against the police officers concerned and individuals responsible for creating and circulating the video. She also demanded an independent inquiry, suspension of the officers involved, and transfer of the investigation to another police station to ensure a fair probe.

The family has reportedly stated that it would withhold the final rites of the deceased until action is initiated against those they hold responsible for his death.

Police officials had not issued a detailed response to the allegations at the time of filing the complaint.

The post mortem of the body was conducted on
Saturday.
