The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the Constitution
(One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, will visit Goa on July 10 and 11 to hold consultations with stakeholders on the proposed simultaneous elections, popularly known as ‘One Nation, One Election’. The Committee, chaired by Member of Parliament P P Chaudhary, will interact with a cross-section of stakeholders to gather views on the proposed constitutional and legal amendments.
The consultations are aimed at assessing the implications of simultaneous elections on governance, administration and the country’s democratic framework.
During the two-day visit, the Committee will meet the state political executive, members of the Goa legislative assembly, senior
state government officials, the chief electoral officer, representatives of national and regional political parties, academicians, legal experts, industry bodies, public sector undertakings, eminent personalities and members of the local and regional media.
The Committee is also scheduled to hold discussions with representatives of higher educational institutions, professional associations, business and industry organisations, and central public sector enterprises operating in Goa.
The visit is part of the Committee’s nationwide outreach exercise to gather inputs from stakeholders before finalising its recommendations on the proposed legislation.
The Committee has already conducted similar consultations in Mumbai, Dehradun, Chandigarh, Shimla, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar, where it interacted with Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, presiding officers of legislatures, political leaders, constitutional authorities, financial institutions, public sector undertakings and regulatory organisations.
