Panaji: The government has notified a Shelter Home Scheme to provide temporary accommodation and rehabilitation to persons of Goan origin aged 18 and above who lack family or social support.
The shelter homes will accommodate 20 to 35 residents, with the government providing Rs 200 per resident per day, besides grants towards staff salaries, rent, medical care and rehabilitation.
Children accompanying their mothers can stay up to the age of seven.
The homes will also provide counselling, medical and psychiatric care, case work services, occupational therapy, education-cum-vocational training and recreational facilities to help residents reintegrate into society.
The scheme extends temporary shelter and rehabilitation to any individual of Goan origin who has no social support systems due to family problems, social ostracism, exploitation and other causes.
It will create a space for individuals to become socially and economically equipped to face challenges.
The implementing agencies for the scheme are non-government voluntary organisations registered under the Registration of Societies Act, 1860, public trusts registered under
any law for the time being in force, local bodies, government bodies or other bodies as specified by the government.
