Lincoln: India A staged a remarkable recovery to reach 488 for eight in their second innings, with Devdutt Padikkal narrowly missing a double century on the third day of the first unofficial Test against New Zealand A here.
India lead by 288 runs heading into the final day after being bowled out for 113 on the opening day and conceding a lead of over 200 runs.
Padikkal struck 199 off 248 balls, hitting 23 boundaries and three sixes before being adjudged caught behind down the leg-side off medium pacer Zak Gibson. With no DRS available, the left-hander had to walk back despite appearing unhappy with the decision.
Padikkal strengthened his case for the No 3 spot in India’s upcoming Test series against New Zealand, having scored back-to-back Test centuries in Sri Lanka. However, Sai Sudharsan, returning to fitness, also impressed with 91 off 184 balls as the pair added 210 runs for the third wicket.
Yash Rathod contributed 66 off 72 balls in a 142-run partnership with Padikkal, while Washington Sundar remained unbeaten on 51. Anshul Kamboj (23) and Auqib Nabi (38) also chipped in with useful contributions.
India will look to press home their advantage on the final day after their recovery from a difficult first innings.
