For Goans, Claudia is not just a name. It is an emotion. The soulful tune from the classic Konkani film ‘Nirmonn’ has touched hearts
across generations.
Many will be delighted to know that this melody, along with several other iconic songs, is included in Rajendra Talak’s upcoming film ‘Claudia’. Talak, like countless Goans, has an appreciation for old Konkani music and the artistes behind these timeless songs inspired him to create this film.
“These musicians and singers were so passionate and dedicated to their craft. I began to wonder what happens when a person can no longer perform on stage,” says Talak.
This idea forms the basis of the story of a celebrated saxophonist Tony Fernandes, who loses the ability to play. As his world falls silent, his daughter Claudia becomes his support system. With help from Chris and their neighbours, she learns to face her fears while guiding her father through his emotional journey.
Talak says the film also aims to reintroduce the younger generation to original Konkani melodies. “Today, there are many remixes of these tunes but not everyone knows the originals. I have always loved them,” he says, as he begins to hum the tune of ‘Claudia’. After a pause, he adds, “Since this is a musical film, the older generation will enjoy reliving the golden era of the 60s and 70s.”
The cast includes Shishir Sharma and Meera Welankar in lead roles, along with well-known Goan musicians such as Mukesh Ghatwal, Omar De Loiola Pereira, Sonia Shirsat, and Lulu Fortes. “Having real musicians in the film brings authenticity. Their expressions, presence and connection with the music feel natural,” Talak explains.
Following its special screening at IFFI, the film will release on December 19.

he says.
Talak believes Konkani cinema has great potential and hopes it will someday stand on par with other prominent film industries in India.
