The High Court of Bombay at Goa has directed the state government and the Goa police to reinstate police constable Kanchan Chodankar, who was suspended in 2007 and terminated without a departmental inquiry. Nearly 18 years later, he will be
reinstated.

Chodankar was terminated after being accused in three separate cases—one of dowry death, and two others involving illegal use of explosives, threats and assault. The court set aside the suspension and termination orders, directing reinstatement within a week while giving liberty to Goa police to conduct a fresh departmental inquiry.

Meanwhile, the court granted conditional bail to Anil Tamburi of Karnataka in a theft case. The court said the applicant shall be released on bail in a crime registered at Colva Police Station, on executing a bail bond of Rs 25,000 with one local surety in the like amount, to be executed before the Sessions Court, Margao. According to a complaint filed by a supervisor of a construction company, unidentified persons loaded 10 shuttering plates and reinforcement steel used in the construction of the Western Bypass into the vehicles and fled.
