Panaji/Ponda: Three accidents reported across the state on Monday left one person dead and two others seriously injured, while a diesel spill following a collision at Curti caused major traffic congestion and panic among commuters.

In the first incident, a 30-year-old tourist from Mumbai died after a self-accident at Bambolim. Police said Anand Kulkarni was riding a scooter when it allegedly skidded near Sainik Aramgarh. He sustained serious injuries and was shifted to Goa Medical College (GMC) by a 108 EMRI ambulance. Police said Kulkarni later succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment. A case of unnatural death has been registered under Section 194 of the BNSS.

In another self-accident, Shivam Kolvekar (29), a resident of Kullem, sustained serious injuries after his car veered off the road and crashed into an electric pole on the Old Goa-Panaji Kadamba bypass on Monday afternoon. The impact extensively damaged the vehicle and left Kolvekar trapped inside the mangled wreckage. Personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot and extricated him from the vehicle. He was found bleeding from his ears and nose and was immediately shifted to GMC Hospital, Bambolim, for treatment.

Meanwhile, at Curti in Ponda, a collision between a tempo and a car at the Old Amigos-Curti underpass junction left car driver Dashrath Mandrekar (50), a resident of Velus in Valpoi, seriously injured. Police said the car travelling from Usgao towards Ponda along the service road collided with a tempo attempting to cross from the bypass road towards the underpass.

The impact caused the tempo’s diesel tank to burst, spilling diesel across a large stretch of the road and bringing traffic to a standstill. The spill triggered panic among commuters and nearby residents as the road became hazardous for passing vehicles. Firefighters rushed to the spot and carried out operations to contain the spill and prevent further mishaps. Ponda police are investigating the accident.
