Ponda: The body of 21-year-old IIT Farmagudi student Emtiyaz Hussain, a native of Kargil in Ladakh, was recovered on Monday afternoon from a tributary of the Dudhsagar near Okamb in Dharbandora. Hussain was suspected to have drowned on Sunday. Firefighters and rescue personnel carried out continuous search operations for nearly 20 hours before recovering the body.

Hussain, a fourth-year Computer Science Engineering student, had visited the riverside destination along with seven friends for a picnic.

Ponda police said the students entered the tributary despite repeated warnings from locals about the dangerous nature of the river stretch, known for slippery rocks, sudden deep pockets and strong underwater currents.

Authorities and locals have repeatedly appealed to tourists and visitors to avoid entering dangerous river stretches in the Dudhsagar region, where similar drowning incidents have been reported.
