Mayem MLA Premendra Shet on Saturday said people should be aware of their responsibility towards serving the nation, while Bicholim MLA
Dr Chandrakant Shetye called for unity and secularism to strengthen the country.
Shet hoisted the Tricolour at a function organised by the Deputy Collector’s office in the presence of
Shetye.
“People should be aware of their responsibility towards serving the nation. Independence was achieved through the great sacrifices of many leaders and youth,” said Shet.
Shetye said people should enrich the nation by maintaining unity, secularism and making efforts to bring laurels to the country.
The main function organised by Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) for schools to celebrate the 80th Independence Day was held at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Maidan. Chief guest Shaba Parab hoisted the flag in the presence of special invitee and headmistress Varsha Thakur-Dhupkar.
NCC cadets presented a march-past. Heads of educational institutions, councillors, freedom fighters and social workers were present. Functions were held across the taluka at different places and were organised by government primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and village panchayats to mark Independence Day.
