Panaji/Pernem

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has ordered a
thorough investigation into the alleged assault on advocate Sadanand Vaingankar at Dhargal in Pernem.

Vaingankar was allegedly assaulted by a group of people on Friday while inspecting a site at Dhargal, where illegal construction was suspected to have been carried out.

The Chief Minister’s office said that Sawant has taken serious cognisance of the incident and directed the police to conduct a detailed and impartial probe into the matter and submit a report at
the earliest.

“The police have registered an offence in the matter, and the Chief Minister has directed that a thorough investigation be carried out and the accused be brought to book,” a statement issued by the CMO stated.

Meanwhile, Pernem police have recovered stolen articles and recorded statements of government officials in connection with the alleged assault on advocate Sadanand Vaingankar during a site inspection at Dhargal.

Police said the accused involved in the incident was taken for medical examination at the Urban Health Centre in Tuem, where the medical officer reported
that he had sustained simple injuries.

During the course of investigation, the police conducted a scene panchanama and recovered a bag containing stolen articles from the spot. Statements of government officials present during the site inspection, including village panchayat secretary Pritam Sawant and sarpanch Arjun Kandolkar, were also recorded, which police said corroborate the complainant’s version.

The main accused Sajjan Konadkar and nine
others, including women, were brought to the police station on Saturday for interrogation as part of the ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, Sangram Dessai, member of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa and guardian member for Goa, visited the police station along with lawyers from Sindhudurg and Goa, and condemned attacks
on lawyers.
