A couple from Merces was killed and two others sustained serious injuries after a car plunged into a roadside gorge near the Anjunem Dam at Chorla Ghat in the early hours

Police said the accident occurred at around 1.10 am when the car, travelling from Belagavi-Karnataka towards Goa, went out of control while negotiating a sharp turn along the ghat road and plunged into a roadside gorge.

Mohan Ramdas Waghmode (58) from Merces and his wife Renuka
Waghmode (48) died on the spot due to the impact of the fall.

Two other occupants of the vehicle, Nivruthi Vithal Waghmode (57) and Ratna Nivruthi Waghmode (47), residents of Vayle-Harvalem in Sankhali, sustained serious injuries in the accident. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where they are currently undergoing treatment.

Police said the driver allegedly lost control of
