Raising doubt over the integrity of an investigation officer, the District and Sessions Court, Merces, has granted

conditional bail to Nigerian national Uche Justice Unuegbu following an incomplete reply filed by police in opposing the bail application of Unuegbu, who was arrested by Anjuna police in a drugs case on January
20, 2026.

“In reply, there is no mention of the name of white colour powder substance. At least the name of the substance, which is provided under the NDPS Act, should have been mentioned, and on the basis of white colour powder substance, the applicant cannot be arrested and kept inside,” observed Sessions Judge Irshad Agha in an order passed earlier
this week.

The Sessions Judge further observed that “the quantity of the substance is also not mentioned. In fact, the integrity of the investigating officer is itself doubtful”.

The court observed that the investigating officer Nitesh Shingadi, who filed the reply, ought to have mentioned the name and quantity of the substance that was attached.

The first objection raised by the police to the bail application was that the accused was a habitual offender and was involved in similar type of crime in Goa. The court observed that “there was one case pending against the applicant; however, it is not ended in conviction”.

The court ordered the release of Unuegbu upon executing a bail bond of Rs 50,000 with one surety in like amount to the satisfaction of the court and subject to certain terms and conditions.

According to the terms and conditions, the applicant shall not leave Goa without prior permission of the court and he shall furnish his contact numbers to the investigating officer and shall not threaten the witness and also not tamper with evidence.

The terms and conditions further state that Unuegbu shall cooperate with the investigating officer and shall remain present before the officer as and when required. Unuegbu shall not indulge in any other criminal activities, the court observed in the order.
