Panaji: A day after strongly opposing the Ghat Aarti project at Naroa in Divar, Cumbarjua MLA Rajesh Faldessai on Monday said project has been scrapped.

On Sunday, the BJP MLA and Chairman of the Goa Rehabilitation Board Faldessai vehemently opposed the possible encroachment of the Naroa crematorium through the Aarti Ghat project. On Monday, after meeting Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Faldessai told mediapersons at Altinho that the Ghat Aarti project would not come up.

“The Chief Minister has told me that the said project by GTDC has been scrapped. I am satisfied with the assurance by the Chief Minister,” he revealed.

The project is being undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs 11 crore by Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), he said.

Alleging that vested interests are attempting to usurp the land, Faldessai said the private crematorium, located in Mayem constituency, serves people from Akhada, Sao Estavao, Old Goa, Cumbarjua, Tirth, Divar and Vanxim.

The BJP MLA had expressed concern over the threat the project could pose to the centuries-old crematorium.

Faldessai had claimed that the project proponent was removing things concerning the crematorium, adding that locals had been demanding that at least 300 square metres of land be retained for the crematorium.
