Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has directed the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to intensify inspections and raids on restaurants, markets, and pharmacies, warning that hygiene violations will result in strict action, including sealing of establishments
for six months.

On Saturday, Rane had said that FDA officials have begun conducting raids across the state. Rane said he has instructed FDA Director Sweta Desai to conduct inspections without pause and submit daily reports.

“If any restaurant or eatery is found lacking in hygiene, we will promptly seal it for six months, regardless of political pressures. Additionally, random inspections of fruits and vegetables in Margao markets will begin, with sample collections to check for chemical
ripening,” he stated.

The minister also announced a crackdown on confectioneries and sweet vendors following complaints about excessive use of colouring agents beyond permissible limits.

“My government and I are committed to ensuring safe food for the public. Action will be taken against fruit wholesalers who use chemical agents to ripen fruits before selling them to consumers,” he said. Rane further disclosed that pharmacies in Goa will also be inspected, warning that those found selling expired medicines will face severe consequences, including possible licence cancellation.

Speaking during his visit to Curtorim on Saturday, Rane urged the media to report any violations, stating that he often relies on media coverage.
