Canacona

The 5 MLD water treatment plant at Gavnem, Gaondongrim, the foundation stone for which was laid on Thursday by Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, Tribal Welfare and Art & Culture Ramesh Tawadkar, is expected to address water issues faced by villagers in Cotigao, Gaondongrim, Poiguinim, Loliem-Polem and other remote areas.

Tawadkar, who is also the Canacona MLA, said the project, costing Rs 27.58 crore, will ensure a reliable supply of potable water to the region. Also present was Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Dessai

Tawadkar urged sarpanchs to propose projects worth Rs 2 crore, and assured that these would be implemented under Tribal Welfare schemes for the benefit of the tribal community in Canacona.

Chief engineer Vishwamber Bhende said the Gaunem water project marks a new phase of development and health for the region.

“Once completed, water from the Gaunem dam will be diverted in two phases to resolve water scarcity in remote areas,” he said.

He said the first phase will begin following the foundation stone laying, while
the second phase will include three pumping stations, three reservoirs, 11 small reservoirs, ensuring potable water supply to the remotest areas.

The project, estimated at Rs 27.58 crore, will be undertaken by Bagkiya Construction Pvt Ltd and is scheduled for completion in 2027.
