In a bid to provide relief to Goans from the soaring coconut prices, the Goa State Horticulture Corporation Limited (GSHCL), a state government undertaking, may continue with the sale of coconuts at subsidised rates though a final decision on the same is yet to be taken.

Speaking to media persons, GSHCL chairman Premendra Shet on Monday said the Corporation has received positive response to the move to sell coconuts at subsidised prices during the ongoing festive season.

“If people want us to provide this service, we may continue with it. We have not taken a decision yet, but we can do it with the approval of the state government. The coconut we utilise to prepare food comes not only from across our state, but we also import it from other states. We want to provide relief to the people by procuring coconuts and selling them to Goans at subsidised rates through the horticulture outlets,” he said.

Shet said that within a span of 12-13 days, the GSHCL managed to sell 75,000 coconuts that were brought in three lots of 25,000 each. “Considering this, we will have to study the requirement and check for 2-3 additional sources to import the product,” he said.
