In a first-of-its-kind initiative, an integrative oncology research and care centre will be inaugurated at All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), Dhargal on Tuesday.
“A tripartite agreement will be signed between the Goa government, AIIA and Tata Cancer Hospital to start the centre on the occasion of Ayurveda Day on Tuesday. This will be a unique centre in India for the first time in the country,” said Dr Sujata Kadam, dean, AIIA Goa.
“Once the patient comes to the centre, he will be examined and based on his condition, treatment would be provided. There are some patients who want to improve their quality of life after radiation therapy and chemotherapy. So considering the stage in which the patient is, the best treatment would be provided. This would include diet, lifestyle, yoga, Ayurveda therapy, etc.,” she said.
Dr Kadam informed that they have already started OPD at the hospital, and that 84 cancer patients have already registered whose treatment is going.
“In the years to come, we will construct a 50-bedded cancer hospital and run it under this centre,” she said.
The AIIA, Goa has been designated as the nodal agency for hosting the 10th Ayurveda Day.
AIIA Goa Director Prof Pradeep Kumar Prajapati said the theme – Ayurveda for People, Ayurveda for Planet – underscores personal health, global well-being, ecological balance, and sustainable development, and that the Ayurveda Day is an opportunity to take Ayurveda to every individual and reaffirm its role in global health.
“The inauguration of new healthcare facilities at AIIA Goa, including an integrated oncology unit, central sterile supply department, linen processing unit and blood bank will strengthen the bridge between Ayurveda and modern medicine,” he said.
AIIA Goa runs 22 OPD services, benefitting more than 800 patients every day, including international visitors.
