KRC: 3 rly stns aimed at reducing delay of trains, improving ops

Margao: In an effort to allay the fears and growing anxieties among the people over the proposed three  railway stations, the Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) on Monday said that these are only aimed at improving operational efficiency.

Following the recent announcement by KRC to construct three railway stations at Sao Jose de Areal, Neura and Mayem, residents of these areas have protested the move, with many alleging that the stations were being planned to benefit coal transportation.

“We understand the concerns of the local population, but these proposed stations are planned only for better operational efficiency and to reduce the delays of the trains. In the recent past, KRC has increased the number of trains, besides the holiday specials. There is no intention to use these stations for passenger services or freight handling,” said Baban Ghatge, General Manager of Public Relations, KRC.

He said that the gap between the existing KRC railway stations in Goa is about 17 kilometers, which contributes to delays due to a lack of crossing stations.

Ghatge said that KRC lacks the necessary land resources at the proposed locations to establish dedicated freight stations.

“Freight and passenger stations have different requirements. A big yard, approach roads, good sheds, and maintenance facilities are needed for freight stations. These proposed locations are not feasible for such developments,” he added.

Residents of Neura and Sao Jose de Areal have continued to voice their opposition.

Neura villagers expressed concerns that the proposed station, located far from residential areas, would not benefit locals and suspected it might be intended for coal transport.

In Sao Jose de Areal, local activist Freddy Travaso has been actively campaigning against the proposal, warning that the station would cause more harm than good.

‘Give us vital amenities’

MARGAO: Villagers of Sao Jose De Areal have strongly opposed the government’s plan to develop a railway station in the village, demanding that basic infrastructure be provided first.

Addressing the media on Monday, villagers stated that the railway station was originally proposed in Sarzora but was met with opposition, and now it has been shifted to Sao Jose De Areal, which is barely two kilometres from Margao station.

They accused the government of pushing projects that would lead to the destruction of the village while neglecting essential amenities.

The villagers pointed out the lack of basic health facilities and challenged the government to send a minister for a first-hand assessment of their difficulties. Stating their firm opposition to the project, they demanded an immediate rollback of the railway station proposal until the village is provided with essential infrastructure.
