Mapusa
A fire broke out at a scrapyard in Mapusa on Tuesday gutting scrap material stored at the site. The exact cause of the fire is not known, though it is suspected to be due to a short circuit.
Two gas cylinders were removed from the premises and nearly 70-80 per cent of the material at the scrapyard was saved due to timely intervention, said Mapusa fire services personnel.
The blaze broke out around 5.30 am at the scrapyard located near the petrol pump along the Mapusa-Bodgini road. Workers who were sleeping at the site ran out of the yard and raised an alert.
Responding to a media query about the scrapyard’s proximity to a fuel station pump, fire services officials said that the department will write to the authorities concerned urging them to take appropriate measures to prevent any untoward incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, a separate fire broke out in dry grass near the ice factory at Nachinola and spread towards a nearby house. Timely intervention by Mapusa fire services personnel brought the fire under control, limiting the damage to minor losses for the house owner.
