GSAI to facilitate SWFS schemes from January 2026
Margao: The Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) has announced that it will facilitate several welfare schemes for seafarers offered by the Seafarers’ Welfare Fund Society (SWFS) from its Maddel, Margao office.
“SWFS had announced the launch of these schemes aimed at providing financial assistance and promoting career advancement among seafarers. These schemes are designed to offer support to eligible individuals in different circumstances and will come into force starting January 1.
Among the schemes is the Old Age Benefit Scheme for 75-year-olds, which provides a one-time financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to Indian seafarers who complete the age of 75 years on or after January 1.
To qualify, seafarers must have an Indian CDC, which must be cancelled, and must have performed a minimum of six months of cumulative sea service after the age of 50 for those applying under the 75 years scheme.
The seafarers must also have worked on Indian flag vessels or through a registered RPSL holding company.
The Career Progression Scheme for Indian Rating to Officer aims to support Indian ratings in upgrading their qualifications to become Merchant Navy officers. The Financial Assistance for Critical / Terminal Illness Scheme seeks to assist Indian seafarers suffering from serious health conditions.
The Medical / Critical Illness & Term Insurance Premium Assistance Scheme aims to partially reimburse seafarers for insurance premiums paid towards medical insurance, critical illness cover and term insurance. Eligible seafarers have been urged to avail of the schemes.
