Canacona

A woman pedestrian Vidya Prabhudessai from Poinguinim sustained serious head injuries after being hit and dragged over 10 metres by a two-wheeler on the highway at Kolsor in Galgibaga-Canacona on Saturday evening.

Police said Prabhudessai was crossing the road when the scooterist, travelling from Char Rasta to Mashem, struck her. The accident was captured on a nearby restaurant’s CCTV camera.

Prabhudessai was initially treated at Canacona CHC and South Goa District Hospital, Margao, before being shifted to Goa Medical College (GMC) for further care.

A case of rash and negligent riding has been registered at the Canacona police station. Local residents blamed the accident on poor road conditions and lack of safety measures. They said that multiple accidents have occurred at the same junction since the highway’s commissioning in 2019. Complaints about the uneven road surface and non-functional streetlights, especially at key junctions, have gone unaddressed.

At the accident site, residents said that streetlights remain non-functional and a damaged light post from an accident three years ago has still not been replaced. “The pole is in a dangerous position and could cause serious injuries in case of another accident,” a local said.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident on Sunday, a four-wheeler travelling from Margao to Karwar crashed into a parked car at Shelim on the NH-66.
