The Tourism Department will crack down on tourism enterprises in the state that are operating without obtaining the requisite registrations and permissions.

Speaking to media against the backdrop of the beach cottages gutted in fire at Ashwem, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said, “When someone wants to do business irresponsibly, such things happen.”

“I have received a report that it is registered under C category wherein they are supposed to be private shacks. We have already sought a report. These powers were delegated earlier at the deputy director level. Recently, we brought it to the director’s level because such episodes happen wherein inspections are not carried out, and records are not found.”

Stating that he has asked the tourism director to constitute a team to check all tourism enterprises, Khaunte said that in some instances, it was observed that hotels that were supposed to be registered in A and B categories were registered as C
category.

“How it has been done is the question. We need to see that action is taken. I will definitely intervene and look into it,” he said, adding that the team will check all tourism enterprises, including hotels, private shacks, among others for the required permissions including registration and renewals.  Khaunte said that he has already directed that private shacks should not be given permission without due diligence.
