The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has intervened after The Navhind Times highlighted the ongoing plight of two retirees and a widow in Pernem, who have been waiting for their rightful civic pensions for twenty-two months. In a swift response, the commission has issued a formal notice to the chief officer of the Pernem Municipal Council (PMC), demanding an explanation for the prolonged delay.

The GHRC’s intervention comes after the newspaper’s exposé brought to light the financial hardship faced by retired municipal employees and their dependents, who have been waiting for their pensions, a basic entitlement, in violation of their constitutional rights. The Navhind Times report, published on March 4, revealed that the beneficiaries, including a widow and the elderly retirees, have been left without sustenance due to significant administrative inefficiencies.

In the notice, the GHRC has sought a comprehensive report from the PMC, holding the authorities accountable for what appears to be a case of administrative neglect.

The commission has directed the chief officer to respond by the scheduled hearing on March 27 at 10.30 am.
