Sankhali: Sanitation workers who maintain the cleanliness of the town are the “true servants of the town and ambassadors of cleanliness,” said Bicholim MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye at a Labour Day felicitation programme.

The event included a felicitation ceremony for Bicholim Municipal Council sanitation workers, a community meal and sports competitions.

“Labour Day serves as a reminder of the historic struggles for workers’ rights.Workers play a vital role in society’s development. Cities remain clean and organised due to their efforts, and that failure to collect garbage on time can lead to serious problems, making sanitation workers an important part of society,” said Shetye.

Sports competitions were held at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Ground, with social worker Dr Dinesh Amonkar gracing the occasion as chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Amonkar said that sanitation workers’ contribution must be recognised.

The evening community meal was attended by former chairman Vijaykumar Natekar, senior citizens Vijay Telang, Narayan Betkikar, Vishwas Gawas, Arun Manjarekar and Samaresh Kanekar, among others. Prizes were distributed to winners.
