In the annals of Goa’s military history, certain names resonate with a sense of duty that spans generations. One such name is that of Commodore Sanjay D’Cunha, VSM.
Hailing from a family in Curtorim, where the olive green and the navy blue are woven into the very fabric of their identity, Sanjay followed in the footsteps of his late father, Major General Ivan D’Cunha. While his brother, Lieutenant General Sumer Ivan D’Cunha, chose to scale the heights of the Indian Army, Sanjay took to the seas, commissioning into the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy in July 1991.
A specialist in Communications and Electronic Warfare, Sanjay’s expertise lies in the critical, often invisible domain of modern naval combat. His career has seen him navigate the high-tech corridors of the Western Naval Command and serve on the decks of the Navy’s most formidable warships. From the guided-missile destroyer INS Delhi to the frigates INS Brahmaputra and INS Trishul, his leadership has been forged in the crucible of frontline operations.
His command of INS Mandovi in Verem—the very cradle where the Navy’s future is shaped—marked a significant chapter in his career. Under his stewardship, the premier training establishment continued to uphold its reputation for excellence, blending rigorous discipline with the evolving needs of maritime security.
Sanjay’s professional journey is backed by a formidable academic foundation. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, he further honed his strategic acumen at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington and the Naval War College. His pursuit of knowledge took him across oceans, including specialised courses in Spectrum Management and Security Transition in the United States, bringing a global perspective back to Indian shores.
Beyond the uniform, he remains deeply connected to his Goan heritage. The military legacy of the D’Cunha family—one of the few in the country to have siblings holding top-tier ranks in both the Army and Navy simultaneously—serves as a beacon for the youth of Goa. It is a reminder that from our small coastal state, giants emerge to guard the vast frontiers of India.
