Vasco: Goa’s cruise tourism season began on Monday with the arrival of the international cruise liner MV Celebrity Millennium at Mormugao Port, bringing 2,078 passengers from countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and India.
The vessel, which sailed from Singapore and called at Cochin en route, will
continue to Mumbai before returning to Goa on November 27.
Port officials and representatives of the Goa government welcomed passengers with traditional Goan hospitality, including a brass band and ceremonial reception.
With 977 crew members onboard and several hundred passengers disembarking, authorities said the port’s preparedness for large-scale cruise operations was evident at the start of the season.
The arrival highlighted Mormugao Port’s growing position as an international cruise hub.
Officials said the upcoming International Cruise Terminal, now in its final stages, will further strengthen Goa’s global standing.
The new terminal will include 24 immigration counters, 10 check-in counters, baggage carousels, a waiting lounge, duty-free outlets and themed commercial spaces.
An ancillary commercial building with an experiential shopping zone, lounges, a food court, ferry facilities, parking and upgraded landscaping is also under way. Authorities said the expanded infrastructure is expected to improve passenger movement, boost turnaround efficiency and create significant economic opportunities for tour operators, taxi services and tourism-linked sectors.
The project forms part of the Union government’s Cruise Bharat Mission, aimed at doubling cruise calls and passenger traffic in five years, generating employment and developing integrated cruise circuits showcasing India’s cultural and natural heritage.
