Hyderabad: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are likely to appoint Ishan Kishan as their interim captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The 27-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, who recently excelled in the T20 World Cup, is expected to take over from Pat Cummins, whose participation is uncertain due to an ongoing injury.

Cummins has been out of action since July 2025 due to a lumbar stress injury. Although he made a brief appearance during the Ashes last December, he missed the T20 World Cup 2026 and has not yet received clearance from Cricket Australia to return to play. Given the ambiguity surrounding his fitness, SRH management is reportedly exploring other options.

Reports indicate that Ishan Kishan is the leading candidate for the captaincy, surpassing Abhishek Sharma in the selection process. Despite not having prior IPL captaincy experience, Kishan boasts significant leadership credentials. He captained India to the Under-19 World Cup final in 2016, led Jharkhand in 79 matches across various formats, and recently steered them to their first Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title. His T20 captaincy record includes 29 matches with 23 victories, resulting in an impressive win percentage of 79.31.

Abhishek Sharma, who has also been considered for the role, has captained Punjab in 31 matches but does not have a comparable record at the senior level.

If the appointment is confirmed, Kishan will make his IPL captaincy debut on March 28, leading SRH in their season opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. This would mark him as the 11th captain in SRH’s history and the first Indian to take on this role since Bhuvneshwar Kumar in 2023.

Currently, SRH has not released an official announcement, but insiders suggest that Kishan is the favoured candidate to lead the team during Cummins’ absence.
