Defending champs ride on Kvaratskhelia, Doue goals to beat Aston Villa 2-1
Salzburg: Paris Saint-Germain began their 2026-27 campaign with silverware, beating Aston Villa 2-1 to retain the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put PSG ahead in the 20th minute with a fierce rising shot from the left, but 17-year-old Brian Madjo equalised with a volley on his competitive debut for Villa.
Desire Doue restored PSG’s lead in the 61st minute, running onto Ousmane Dembele’s pass and curling a left-foot shot into the far corner. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was awarded after a VAR review showed Villa right-back Matty Cash had kept Doue onside.
PSG, who won five trophies last season, became the first team since Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017 to win back-to-back Super Cups.
Madjo, who joined Villa from Metz in January, impressed on his debut and had earlier hit the post. He was cleared to play last week after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld Villa’s appeal over his registration.
The match was officiated by Somali referee Omar Artan, the first non-European official to referee the Super Cup.
