Margao: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has announced that vehicles parked on public roads for over eight days without movement will be considered abandoned and directly sent for scrapping. No claims for such vehicles will be entertained once the scrapping process is initiated.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Fatorda traffic cell, the Chief Minister directed traffic authorities to identify such vehicles, issue notices, and proceed with scrapping if the vehicles are not removed within the stipulated time.
He said that a similar drive in Panaji had already led to the seizure of 250 abandoned vehicles.
He said that the government is in the process of integrating traffic signals with AI-based CCTV cameras to detect and book violations. Challans will only be issued by PIS and PSIs equipped with body cameras. He urged the public to follow traffic rules and maintain discipline on the roads.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai said unauthorised parking was reducing the recently widened Fatorda-Arlem road to a single lane. He said that despite land sacrifices and extensive work to widen the road, parking violations were undermining the efforts.
Sardesai also called for action against roadside garages that obstruct traffic and urged the chief minister to expedite the installation of CCTV cameras in Fatorda. He said that the new traffic cell is not intended to fine people, but to enforce traffic discipline and promote cooperation among residents.
