The Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) on Tuesday resolved not to renew licences for certain large housing projects in the municipal area, citing lack of sufficient resources such as water, electricity and garbage management. Councillors also pointed to two projects in the area that people have opposed.
“There was an issue regarding some projects that were coming up in Cuncolim and the councillor and the people of those areas have raised objections saying that they fear they will not get enough water and electricity. They have asked not to renew the licence of another project. Whether we can revoke it, we will have to seek advice,” said CMC chairperson Landry Mascarenhas at the council meeting.
He also stated that Cuncolim locals have opposed large housing projects
and asked them not to give permission. “But our hands are tied because we got a court order to give permission of one of the projects. So, we have taken a resolution not to renew it further and will send this resolution to the DMA,” said Mascarenhas.
Councillor John Dias said that no boards stating project information have we put up at the construction sites. “Then we as councillors get blamed for taking money for allowing the project. We have to see the carrying capacity of Cuncolim, as already there is water shortage, power and garbage issues,” said Dias.
Stating that three large housing projects are coming up in his ward, another councillor said they don’t want such development.
“I was also not aware of it and people started asking me once the work started. I have submitted a complaint but no inspection has been carried out. Today we sought revocation of the nod to the project. One of the projects has 65 flats with two swimming pools, club and other amenities. People will face a lot of problems related to water, electricity and garbage. A resolution has been taken to revoke the permissions,” said the councillor.
