Coach Mahesh Gawali picks versatile defender in build-up for AFC U-20 Qualifiers

Panaji: Goa’s Asher Rebello is on the verge of fulfilling a childhood dream after being named in India’s 30-member Under-20 squad for the international friendlies against Singapore in Bengaluru.

While the camp marks his third stint with the national team, the FC Goa defender is set for his first opportunity to wear the India jersey in a match when the Blue Colts face Singapore today, followed by a second friendly on August 6. The fixtures form part of India’s preparations for the AFC U-20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers.

“It’s a proud moment. Playing for the national team is every child’s dream, and one of my dreams is coming true,” Asher stated. “But the journey doesn’t end here. I have to keep working hard, earn my place in the playing XI and, hopefully, progress to the senior national team.”

The versatile defender admitted there is more excitement than nerves ahead of his expected debut.

“The coaching staff has been very friendly, the coach is really good and the atmosphere within the team is excellent. Everyone has bonded really well. So, it’s not nervousness—it’s pure excitement and the thrill of stepping onto the pitch and fighting for a victory,” he said.

Asher also highlighted the intensity of the national camp, saying the sessions have helped him raise his game.

“The tempo has been really good. The tactical side of the training and the way every session is planned is amazing. It really helps a player develop and take his game to the next level,” he said.

If handed his maiden appearance, the Goan says his focus will be on keeping his emotions in check.

“I’ll just remind myself to stay calm, stay focused and not get carried away by the occasion. Whatever challenges come my way, I want to deal with them calmly. I think I’m ready for it,” he added.

Head coach Mahesh Gawali has named a 30-member squad for the two closed-door friendlies, with the matches serving as the team’s final tune-up before the AFC U-20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers later this month.
