Canacona

A 33-year-old worker from Karnataka, Sharan Basav, died after suffering an electric shock while carrying out lift installation work at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Canacona on Thursday.

Canacona police said a co-worker, Manjunath N, also from Karnataka, told investigators that he, Basav and N Chandrashekar were carrying out lift installation work on the second floor of the hospital when the incident occurred.

During the work, Basav accidentally came into contact with an electrical source and suffered an electric shock. He became unconscious and was shifted to the casualty ward, where the duty doctor declared him brought dead.

Former councillor and activist Shubham Komarpant has demanded an electrical safety audit of the hospital to prevent similar accidents on the premises. He has also sought compensation for the deceased worker’s family, alleging that the accident occurred due to negligence on the part of the contractor involved in the work.

Meanwhile, a house belonging to Laxmi Komarpant at Tembewada was gutted in a fire on Thursday. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

Sources said Laxmi, who is the sole resident of the house, had been admitted to the Canacona CHC due to an illness when the fire broke out.

Minister and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, accompanied by BJP Canacona workers, visited the affected house and assured Laxmi of support in constructing a new house.

Canacona police are investigating both incidents.
