Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has petitioned the Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju to recall the cancelled Goa Assembly and has also requested the Speaker to facilitate the process and the Chief Minister to pave the way. Alemao has demanded discussion on Bills and unfinished business of the House following its abrupt cancellation.

It may be noted that the Assembly was adjourned sine die on March 16 over the model code of conduct.

“I write to you with deep concern regarding the abrupt curtailment of the recent Goa Legislative Assembly session, which was justified on the grounds of the Ponda by-polls and the enforcement of the model code of conduct. This justification was hollow and did not stand the test as the state assemblies of other similar regions were in session. The real reason for the sudden and abrupt closure of the apex democratic institution remains a mystery,” Alemao said.

He further said that the by-election to the Ponda constituency stands cancelled consequent to the judgement of the High Court. “As a result, there should be no hindrance as projected earlier for the state assembly to function and transact the unfinished business before the House,” Alemao said.

He said that the people of Goa expect their elected representatives to deliberate and decide on crucial Bills that safeguard land resources, environment, demography and identity.
