All Goa Private Bus Owners’ general secretary Sudip Tamhankar was allegedly assaulted by seven persons at the Mapusa New Bus Stand on Saturday afternoon, with Tamhankar claiming the attack was linked to his efforts to expose the illegal registration of interstate buses.

The incident occurred at around 2.30 pm when Tamhankar’s scooter was allegedly pushed, causing him to fall to the ground, after which the attackers kicked him.

Addressing the media, Tamhankar said he called the Mapusa police, but they did not reach the spot. He said taxi operators present in the area helped him get out of the situation.

Tamhankar said he had been working to expose the alleged illegal registration of buses plying interstate. “Buses plying on interstate bus stands operate on leave and licence by paying Rs 1.50 lakh using fake address proofs. When I took the name of one of the operators before the media, all of a sudden around seven people came and attacked me,” he said.

“I have raised this issue with the Chief Minister and the Transport Minister, but there was no action being initiated,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mapusa police have registered an offence in the matter and arrested four persons.

Later, Tamhankar met the Chief Minister who assured to look into his demands.
