The Porvorim flyover will be inaugurated on September 9 by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.
Coming out with this information, Public Works Minister Digambar Kamat said that the inauguration was earlier scheduled for September 10 but has now been advanced by a day. “We have already received Gadkari’s new programme schedule,” he said.
The 5.15 km, six-lane flyover, built at a cost of Rs 641 crore, runs along the National Highway 66 (NH-66) from Sangolda/Guirim to the Neo Majestic Hotel.
The project is designed to resolve severe traffic bottlenecks on National Highway 66, dramatically cutting travel time between Mapusa and Panaji, while drastically improving transit to the Manohar International Airport in Mopa.
In a unique initiative planned by the Public Works Department (PWD), the flyover is likely to be opened exclusively to pedestrians for a two-day public walk just before it is officially thrown open to vehicles. This will give residents and visitors a rare, safe opportunity to walk along the 5.15-km elevated highway.
