Ponda: After a series of actions against illegal scrapyards, the Ponda Municipality demolished a structure of the fourth scrapyard in the town, located at Warkhande near the Hanuman Temple, on Monday. The demolition was carried out under the orders of the Deputy Collector.
Engineer Vishant Naik said that the scrapyard owner was given 15 days to vacate the space.
The Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) had identified four illegal scrapyards.
In November 2024, the council had resolved to take action against the illegal scrapyards, including one near Hanuman Temple, which
filed an objection with the Collector against |the PMC’s notice. The remaining three scrapyards, located near Shital Bar in Warkhande, Silvanagar, and Durgabhat, were demolished in January following multiple notices to vacate the premises.
During the hearing process for the scrapyard near Hanuman Temple, the deputy collector ordered its demolition and instructed the owner to vacate the premises.
PMC Chairperson Anand Naik said, “The areas will be cleared promptly, and PMC will ensure that no one attempts to establish scrapyards in the area in the future.”
Naik said scrapyards in a densely populated town like Ponda, where residential areas are in close proximity, is dangerous.
