Mapusa

The Mapusa JMFC court has remanded a man, arrested by Saligao police for allegedly murdering his wife, in seven days’ police custody. The incident took place at a rented premises in Saligao on Friday.

Police said that in a fit of anger, the accused, identified as Vinod Rathod, 40, a native of Karnataka,
slit his wife Rukmini Rathod’s throat with a knife and later strangulated her. Police said the weapons allegedly used in the crime have been recovered.

An autopsy was conducted on Saturday, after which the body was handed over to the family.

Police said that after allegedly killing his wife, Rathod left the body inside the room, covered it with a sheet and went to take their children from school. He first dropped his two daughters at his sister-in-law’s house and then collected his younger son from school. He later walked
into the police station and surrendered.

Police said that when a team reached the rented premises, they found Rukmini’s body lying inside the room covered with a sheet. Initial investigation revealed that the alleged motive behind the murder was a family dispute and financial strain between the couple.

Saligao police conducted a panchanama and registered a case of murder.

Further investigation is in progress.
