His early goal hands Chapora Yuvak Sangh a 1-0 victory

Nagoa: Soham Sheticar’s early finish guided Chapora Yuvak Sangh to a 1-0 victory over Cortalim Villagers SWSC in the Goa Professional League at the Nagoa ground on Wednesday.

Chapora broke the deadlock when Omkar Shetgaonkar split the defence with a through ball to Soham Sheticar, who controlled neatly, dribbled into the box and slotted past the Cortalim goalkeeper.

Cortalim almost responded immediately as Clifton Rebello found Partha Haldar inside the box, but his well-taken shot went wide. The Villagers

controlled much of the midfield thereafter, with Ashnoy Gomes switching play to involve Richie Vaz and Rebello, though Chapora’s defence held firm to protect the narrow lead at the interval.

Chapora enjoyed better control after the break, with Cyprian Rodrigues posing a constant threat. Shetgaonkar again created an opening with a through pass for Cyprian on the left, but Delmon Rebello produced a timely block.

Cortalim continued to press, sending balls into the box, but centre-backs Edwin Viegas and Saurabh Patil dealt confidently with the aerial threat. Their best late chance came when Ankush Singh’s long ball found Atif Shaikh, whose pass set up Norman Dias for a first-time effort that was safely gathered by the Chapora goalkeeper.

Chapora saw out the closing minutes to seal a hard-fought 1-0 win.
