Public Works Department Minister Digambar Kamat on Thursday said the
Central government has sanctioned Rs 2,000 crore for strengthening Goa’s road network.
Kamat was speaking as chief guest at the Goa
Revolution Day function organised by the state government at Lohia Maidan
in Margao.
Recalling the events of June 18, 1946, he said, “Dr Ram Manohar Lohia and Dr Juliao Menezes had ignited the anti-Portuguese movement by addressing a public gathering at the same venue, which was later named Lohia Maidan in honour of Dr Lohia.”
Kamat said the country was progressing under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and moving towards becoming a global power.
He also referred to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s efforts towards achieving the vision of ‘Viksit Goa 2037’.
“The Central Government had allocated substantial funds for Goa’s development, including Rs 2,000 crore for improving road infrastructure across the state,” said Kamat.
He also said efforts would be made to address the pending demands of freedom fighters.
Avinash Shirodkar, president of the 18 June Kranti Din Samiti, spoke about the origins of the movement and said Goans had united against Portuguese rule, enduring injuries and making sacrifices while keeping the movement alive until Goa’s liberation in 1961.
He thanked freedom fighters for their contribution and made special mention of freedom fighter Vasant Naik, who attended the programme. Individuals from various fields were honoured during the programme, including Gil Souza, Engineer Kamat and journalist Roque Dias.
